General information

Urologist surgeon Athanasios Takis received his Medical degree (1999) and the Urology Specialty (2009) from the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He obtained his PhD from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, he received the degree ‘Master of Urology’ from the Democritus University of Thrace and also the title of FEBU (Fellow of European Board of Urology), and after a 3 year-long work experience as Specialist at the Urological clinic of the Ippokrateio General Hospital of Thessaloniki, he has a private urology practice in Thessaloniki.

Academic studies and training

Urologist Athanasios Takis comes from Veria. He graduated from the 1st General High School of Veria. After obtaining his Medical degree he specialised in General Surgery in the 1ST Surgical University Clinic of AHEPA Hospital followed by the specialties of urology, andrology and urogynaecology in the urology clinic of the Ippokrateio General Hospital of Thessaloniki. He obtained his PhD from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens as well as the degree of ‘Master of Endourology’ from the Democritus University of Thrace.

He started his specialisation in urology in 2004 in endourology (lithiasis of the renal system), andrology (erectile dysfunction-infertility), urogynaecology (incontinence) and urologic oncology (prostate, kidney, urinary tract cancer), also participating in the first laparoscopic procedures of the clinic. He was further trained on the pathogenesis of prostate cancer with the PhD he was awarded from the University Urological Clinic of the Laiko General Hospital for his dissertation on the effect of oxidative stress on the prostate gland of rats after inducing experimental hypercholesterolaemia.

His training continued for 1 year in the Urological University clinic of the Democritus University of Thrace on procedures dealing with lythiasis of the renal system like percutaneous nephrolithotripsy and ureteroscopies as well as prostate surgery using Laser, which led to the degree of Master of Endourology 2011. He trained on endourology and laparoscopy in the Urological clinic of the University Hospital Academic Medical Centre (AMC) in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Professional experience

After the end of his specialisation and holding the title of Specialist, Dr. Athanasios Takis continued working in the Urological clinic of the Ippokrateio General Hospital of Thessaloniki for 3 years, performing many open and endoscopic surgical procedures, while also participating in the first laparoscopic procedures for kidney and prostate cancer. Dr. Athanasios Takis was Ηead of the prostate clinic (benign hyperplasia of the prostate – cancer of the prostate) and the urogynaecology clinic (incontinence), taking part at the same time in many research protocols of the clinic relating to the treatment of benign hyperplasia and prostate cancer. At the moment he works as Urologist surgeon in Thessaloniki and operates at the Interbalkan Medical Centre (IMC).

Awards

For the first time, the Urological clinic of the Ippokrateio General Hospital of Thessaloniki presented at a European urology convention which took place in Stockholm in 2009 a dissertation on the subject of ‘Study of the Oxidative Stress in the Prostate Gland of Rats after Inducing a Hypercholesterolaemia Diet’, a nominee for the first award at the 19th Pan-Hellenic Urology Conference in 2008. He appeared on the Pan-American endourinology Conference posters titled ‘Laparoscopic Treatment of Nutcracker Syndrome’, 2010. He was a guest teacher in a urodynamic neurourology and urogynaecology workshop 2009 (Thessaloniki).

Dr. Athanasios Takis participated as an expert in many international and Greek medical conferences, research studies, international publications and presentations as well as a teacher for students of higher technological institutions but also to registrar urologists as part of the urologists’ training in the Urological Association of Northern Greece.

Research

Dr. Athanasios Takis, apart from the study of the oxidative stress on the prostate gland of rats after inducing experimental hypercholesterolaemia, the study of comparing the analgesia techniques in extracorporeal lithotripsy, he also got involved with the research for the treatment of prostate cancer like the study for the administration of biphosphonates to patients with metastatic prostate cancer and the administration of 150mg Casodex as monotherapy for the localised and topically advanced prostate cancer.
