Regular duties:
- Ward Based:
Looking after in-patients and out-patients (who visit day unit) receiving all cancer treatment including chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiotherapy, as well those who are admitted acutely unwell with complications from treatment. This involves leading ward-rounds and formulating management plans independently, as well as participating in consultant-led rounds.
I take part in teaching junior staff and medical students on the ward, as well as participation in journal club.
I actively participate in the multidisciplinary team, liaising with nurses, physiotherapy and occupational therapy teams, the discharge co-ordinator, social services and other medical teams including palliative care.
-Out-patients clinic:
Assessing new and follow-up patients in oncology outpatients clinic, and chemotherapy day unit, seeking senior advice where required.
-On-Call/Emergency duties which include covering medical oncology, clinical oncology and haematological oncology in-patients, and receiving referrals from other hospitals, and advising patients who contact the ‘chemo hotline’. I also hold the ‘crash bleep’ and attend to cardiac arrest and peri-arrest situations working in a team to resuscitate patients where possible.
